Isabella’s work My Girl is a representation of love and companionship through her personal relationship with her cat. Heavily inspired by Frida Kahlo’s Self Portrait With Monkey, Isabella replicates Kahlo's idea of companionship with the monkey, as well as her emphasis of her features by elongating her neck and the plaits under her hair. By directly referencing herself through the use of self portraiture, Isabella explores identity and the human experience through the plaits wrapping around her neck. The symbolism of the plaits represent the memories, experiences and lessons she holds onto through the uncut hair, as a reminder of how much she’s grown, with her cat never leaving her side.
