Description
This art work is inspired by some of the fantasy novels I have been reading and medieval fantasy movies I have watched. My idea was to create a magical place to go to think, a safe haven and a place you can escape to. My starting point for this surrealism piece was dividing the paper into four quadrants. I knew I wanted to do a castle, so I started sketching this on the top right quadrant. Then as I was continuing with the castle I knew I had to have the staircase, so I decided to put it on the bottom left to balance the picture. Sitting back and having a look at it I needed to continue with the fantasy theme, so I decided to draw a tree with a face in the top left of the page as it balances the art piece. The roots of the tree are growing over and under the staircase, protecting the castle and those in it. I started working back on the castle to have it look a little bit more grand. I thought a way adding to the piece was to add some plants and bushes, but I decided against it as they didn't fit the fantasy feel I was imagining. As the topic was surrealism I decided to have the moon under the castle and the water following up the waterfall towards it. Everything was about the surrounding and protecting the castle.

In Memory of Rob Leonard, Our Founder

It is with great sadness that the Board of Directors, staff, and myself from the Children’s Charity Network must inform you of the passing of our founder, Mr Rob Leonard, following a 14-month battle with Cancer. We pass our condolences to Rob’s friends and family at this terrible time.

Rob was a wonderful, caring man with a passion for service and charity. His vision to influence young Australians through literacy 25 years ago has impacted thousands, who will all be saddened by this news. In honour of Rob, I look forward to growing his vision and continuing to advocate for the value of literacy and arts.

Please take a moment to reflect upon Rob’s impact on you, and remember his uncompromising belief in the power of Art and Writing.

Rob, you will be truly missed but never far away from our thoughts.

May Rob’s memory be a blessing.
